Where the hell is Jacobs Well?

Once just a comedy bumper sticker, after years of speculation this now-famous question has finally been solved!  Labelled the Gateway to Southern Moreton Bay, Jacobs Well is a quaint fishing village situated approximately halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Attracting those in search of a sea change and boaties looking for the very best fishing grounds, Jacobs Well has a long and rich history dating back to the mid-1800s.

Once believed to be a key stopping point for thirsty travellers and for steamships to replenish water stocks, one proud local resident decided it was about time the well was found! Chas Watt took to social media and posed the challenge of anyone knowing where it was.

Naturally, this attracted a lot of attention, but none more so than that of Dave Mayo, member of the Jacobs Well and District Progress Association. Together the two men managed to unearth a map of the area dating back to 1874, which indicated an approximate location of the well. With modern surveying equipment, they are confident that the well has been found under a patch of dirt at Lion’s Park on Jacobs Well road.

Dave Allan & Dave Mayo

To say that this is a historic moment would be an understatement. Finding Jacob’s well allows us to preserve a significant piece of infrastructure that one could argue was critical to the development and growth of Southern Queensland. Since unearthing the location of the Well, Dave has proposed development around the area as well as the construction of a replica Well that would not only honour the significance of the area but attract valuable tourism and business. More information about this proposed development can be found through local Councillor Donna Gates.

Jacobs Well is already a much-loved part of South East Queensland with its stunning water views, scenic sugar cane fields and access to the islands and channels of the Jumpinpin area. There are a number of different theories about the origins of the name Jacobs Well, it is posed that it may have a biblical reference or it was named after the eldest son of Johann Gottlieb Gross, a pioneer and early settler of Pimpama Island in the early 1860s who found a well whilst hunting and fishing with friends. The latter account of the naming of Jacobs Well was signed by B.E. Mondientz and was presented to the Albert Shire Council in July 1971.

So now that the Well has been found, the origins of its name are still uncertain but there are theories at play. The next bumper sticker for this historic little town may very well be, ‘Who the hell is Jacob?’
